Proverbs 23:23

Proverbs 23:23 ESV

“Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.”

What does it mean to ‘buy truth’?

To buy truth is to sacrifice for it.  It means what ever is true that is what you ‘go for’, you try to get at whatever the cost.  To buy truth means that truth is what you want when you rise in the morning, when you work through the day, and when you lie down again at night.

To buy truth means that you don’t pay attention to lies.  It means that you don’t allow lies to continue when you can stop them.  To buy truth means that when you lie to yourself you preach the truth to yourself so you can’t get away with it.

What does it mean to ‘sell truth’?

To sell truth means you give up what is right and honorable and true for a mess of porridge.  To sell truth means that you sacrifice so that a lie may continue.  To sell truth means that you allow a bribe to cover your eyes, it means that you ‘play the game’ when it comes to light that someone is lying.

What does it mean to buy ‘wisdom, instruction, and understanding’?

To buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding means that you live your life in such a way that it is noticeable that you march to the drummer that beats out the truth.  It means that even though something is uncomfortable, unpopular, or even costly to you in your pocketbook, your relationships, or your time, the fact that it is the right thing to do is enough to settle any argument in your mind:  you will do what is right.

What is the cost?

          Everything in this world.

What is the benefit?

Everything worth keeping: you can’t take anything that won’t fit into your heart.

Purchasing from the Bible together with you,

Pastor Greg
